Intermediate Workshop

Course Tutor: Jeremy Humphries
Duration: 1 day
Scheduled Dates: See Calendar of Courses
This course is also available as a Bespoke Workshop (delegates set the date and decide the topics).

Overview:
I have always thought if you can shoot observational well, then you can film anything! When everything is going on at the same time, when you can still film something that looks fabulous, cuts and tells the story you want to tell; when the technique of operating the camera comes second nature- that is what we are striving to train you to do. From ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ to ‘Police Camera Action’ my camera has to be in the right place at the right time- no second chances! It’s what I love doing best.

Topics include:
• To begin to self shoot confidently across the documentary genre.
• Who to film when five people are talking at once!
• How to keep your left eye open.
• How to translate ‘chaos,’ into sequenced scenes that will edit!
• Interview technique and eyelines.
• Basic crossing the line technique explained.
• Understanding and implementing focus, F stop, focal length.
• Basic interview lighting.
• Using lens and depth of field creatively.
• To learn how to be instinctive and not be phased by the technicalities.
• Working with contributors.
• Audio location recording.
• Understanding and applying colour temperature.
• Available and mixed lighting scenarios.
• Shooting landscapes and using the widescreen frame.
• Basic filter usage.
• Panning smoothly.
• Hand holding the camera and safe posture.
• Applying a script when shooting observational.
• Using the weather and backlighting.

What experience you might have had beforehand:
Delegates who have been on this workshop have more often than not shot sequences or even films before. They are looking to improve their technique at the same time as prepare themselves, for future productions, by being more comprehensively trained.

What job this workshop might help you apply for:
You would be applicable for significant self shooting and documentary productions, where working professionally with presenters and contributors, in an observational or more formal interview format, is key.
