Course Tutor: Jeremy Humphries
Duration: 1 day
Scheduled Dates: See Calendar of Courses
This course is also available as a Bespoke Workshop (delegates set the date and decide the topics).
Overview:
I remember when I was the DoP on the BBC ‘Wildest Dreams’. A huge marquee sized tent in the middle of the African savannah, probably a five stop difference between the sunshine outside and the shaded tent inside. We didn’t want any generator noise, so it had to be silent portable battery lights. Faces had to be seen inside and the detail outside too! Situations like this are why I enjoy the Lighting Workshop; how to tackle the unusual, but also how to be inspired without a lorry load of lights. We have fun doing this; it’s hands on, both practical and theory, and you learn that with a little training plenty can still be achieved despite limited time, equipment and money.
Topics include:
• Why do we light?
• Lighting for mood, emotion and interview.
• Lighting for interview.
• A look at the lens and how an F stop works.
• Using depth of field in your lighting.
• Use of backlight and reflectors.
• Hard or soft light?
• Tungsten or daylight?
• Available v artificial light.
• Lighting in cars.
• Use of street lights.
• Low light filming- candles and fires.
• Lighting big rooms for atmosphere (we will discuss masked ball in ‘Ladette to Lady’).
• What is day for night?
• Light filtration and colour temperature.
• HMI lighting and flicker.
• Battery lights.
• Lighting for camera movement.
• Lighting for sound- shadows.
• What is the Magic Hour?
• Safety.
What experience you might have had beforehand:
We are happy for you to attend with limited experience. With lighting, it often helps if you come to it with a basic knowledge and we can begin from scratch. Most delegates though will have a limited use of lighting and now want to begin to master the art fully.
What job this workshop might help you apply for:
Even with a basic knowledge of lighting you will find the opportunities open up in front of you. You will be able to confidently tackle more complex shoots where interview lighting or shooting in low light is more of an issue than before.
Who has attended this type of course?
Self Shooting Assistant Producers and Directors wanting to advance their shooting role. Film students starting off and seeking a basic grounding.
